The Humboldt Archipelago is in danger

The Humboldt Archipelago is one of the most biodiverse and ecologically important parts of the Chilean coast and the southeast Pacific 🌊

🌎  It is home to 80% of the world’s endangered Humboldt penguin population 🐧  as well as many other seabird species, sea lions, sea otters 🦦  dolphins 🐬 and orca. It is also a summer feeding ground for endangered blue, fin and humpback whales 🐋, and is the finest example of a Humboldt Current kelp forest in the world 🌿

🚧 What is the problem? 🚧

Despite the alarming global situation presented in the United Nations IPCC report🌡 on August 11, an Environmental Commission approved a controversial mining-port project, Dominga ⛏, which is set to be built in the coastal town La Higuera 📍 in the north of Chile.

⛔️ The area where the project is planned is a priority site for conservation and a biodiversity hotspot, and any industrial project would generate irreparable damage to this ecosystem and the coastal communities that depend on sight-seeing tourism and fishing 🌊 🦪 🤿 🚣🏽‍♀️

Dominga is yet another example of economic development vs. environmental protection 💰 ⚖️ 🌱

⌛️ Development can no longer come at the expense of ecosystems or natural, environmental and cultural heritage. It is key 🗝 to combat the current climate crisis that our future is sustained by equitable development that protects biodiversity.

We cannot afford to lose this hope spot for the oceans 🐳

That’s why we say #NOADOMINGA ❗️❗️❗️
